The
story behind the artwork
These three miniature
paintings were created simultaneously. They are part of a triptych. The
imagery is underwater-based, like much of my work, but there is a special
symbolism to these three pieces. Drift, join,
and start represent visual descriptions of objects
you may see in a coral reef environment. Drift
could be a jelly or invertebrate floating in the current. Join
could be two polyps nestled close together in a tight coral colony. Start
could be the very beginning of a sea sponge that has coiled around and
around itself in a spiral formation over the years.
Symbolicly, these
words imply action. In today's society we are constantly given the opportunity
to involve ourselves with clubs, initiatives, and causes. We can choose
to drift and stay out of it, or perhaps observe it from a distance. We
can join a movement that has already begun. Or we can make the extra effort
to start our own initiative with the hope that others will join. The colors
transition from left to right, from cool blues to hot reds, emphasizing
the mood of involvement levels.
