Inspired by the flowing magma of Kilauea on Hawaii. I'd like to share an excerpt from my travel-log entitled "Hawaii: The Big (ADVENTURE) Island!" "... Another day we went exploring the active volcanic crater of Kilauea. The whole place is literally steaming with activity. The landscape is really unearthly with steam vents peppered about and enormous cracks from seismic activity, and still there are trees and shrubs and grassy ferns that still dare to grow in the most hostile of environments. As you drive along the rim, it's like memory lane as you pass signs dating the recent lava flows over the past 20 years. Nothing like standing on ground that is younger than you are! As we made our way down to Puu oo vent, the sun was going down. This afforded us a spectacular view at night of the glowing orange lava as it flowed down the side of the vent and into the sea, ending in a spectacular burst of steam. This Big Island is still in the process of creating itself!" 5 December, 2005 |
