The story behind the artwork

Serpentine is my tribute to the common brown snake of Australia. I encountered several while in the Outback, and they are a force to treat with ultimate respect. The one in my painting is coiled and territorial. Its scales are large and thick. There’s something prehistoric about its rugged exterior and the ridiculous levels of toxicity in its venom.

My reaction to snakes has changed over the years. The intense instinctual fears I was born with have faded to the background. Now, I am full of respect for them, and actually look forward to encountering them by chance in the wild.
